Landlords, avoid the pain and know your Property Rights before you Invest – a Q&A site for you

property rights investment

My experience tells me that very few people who invest in property know their property rights, especially in a changing South Africa, where property law has significantly since 1994.

This hilarious video screened below, by the late Buddy Hackett says it all … invest without knowing your property rights at your peril!

Once you have wiped the tears out of your eyes, pause and consider if you know it all when it comes to your landlord rights. I have seen landlords and tenants alike get into all sorts of complications by assuming that if something seems right to them, the law of the land would agree with them. NOT SO!

What can you do with a tenant who damages your property, doesn’t pay timeously, or stops paying and refuses to vacate?

A simple thing like switching your tenant’s water and lights off is unlawful and  can place you in some very hot water.

  • Can I lock my tenant out if he doesn’t pay?
  • How can I legally evict a tenant?
  • I have cancelled my lease but the tenant refused to move, what can I do?
  • Does the PIE Act mean I cannot evict a problem tenant? (Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (PIE) (1998))
  • How does the Consumer protection act effect landlords? (Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008)
